What is the history of Mizuhiki?
Mizuhiki, an intricate art form of Japanese decorative knotting, traces its origins back to the Asuka Period (600-700 CE). Legend has it that its inception can be attributed to Ono no Imoko, a prominent figure in Japanese history, who, upon returning from a diplomatic mission to the Sui Dynasty, brought back gifts adorned with red and white hemp strings, a gesture that sparked the tradition of using these vibrant cords in ceremonial offerings to the imperial palace. Over time, Mizuhiki replaced hemp strings during the Muromachi Period (1336-1573 CE), evolving from a symbol of luxury to a widely embraced element of Japanese culture. From the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) onwards, Mizuhiki transcended its aristocratic roots, becoming accessible to the general public and ingraining itself as an integral part of Japanese aesthetics and traditions.

The Awaji knot is named after the Awaji region in Japan, as its shape resembles the whirlpool in the Naruto Strait. The Awaji musubi is the fundamental knot and is used in all other knots.
